Cineville is a film platform from The Netherlands that aims to make independent cinema(s) more accessible. It’s an-all-you-can-watch membership, an alliance of European independent cinemas and a collective marketing tool. This article focuses on how Cineville’s core audience has changed and diversified over the years.

Bringing in a younger crowd

Cineville's customer base is made up of all kinds of film enthusiasts: from hardcore fans who go to the movies weekly to people who go once a month with friends – and everything in between. Since Cineville’s inception in 2009, its audience has grown and diversified, its succes measured not only by growth but also by its appeal to younger and varied audiences across different countries and cities.

When Cineville started, its main goal was to make independent cinemas – traditionally attended by older audiences – more appealing to young people. Today, we can say the concept has worked: Cineville's member base is both youthful and diverse, with a distinct distribution of members across all ages. The Cineville audience follows a two-peaked pattern that can be roughly divided into a younger group (aged approx. 18 - 35) and an older group (aged 50+). There’s a significant drop in numbers between 35 and 50, when people have less free time because of career and familial responsibilities.

As per March 2025, 45% of Dutch Cineville members are between 20 and 35 years old – more than double their share in the overall Dutch population (20%). This makes Cineville particularly effective in reaching younger cinemagoers, especially students and young adults in urban areas. Similar numbers can be found in other Cineville countries, with Belgium’s average member age being 35 in 2025 (and 71% being between 20 and 39), Austria’s Nonstop Kino’s being 34 (with 68% under 35) and Germany’s being 41 (with 50% under 35).$^1$ As shown by a 2019 Cineville impact study$^2$, the age of Dutch cinema visitors has declined because of Cineville. At some cinemas, younger Cinevillers make up the bulk of all visits.

Though Cineville welcomes everyone who loves film, a large part of its marketing focus is indeed reserved for this younger crowd – because they are the future of film, and because young audiences are generally more adaptable and spontaneous. Used to trying different kinds of subscription models, they're open to change and willing to experiment – a perfect match for the Cineville concept. Over the years, young people have shown to be Cineville’s early adopters, jumping on board right after the launch and bringing their friends to screenings they’re willing to be surprised by.

The effect Cineville has had on the rejuvenation of the independent cinema audience is the result of a four-pronged strategy:

  1. Accessible tone of voice

Cineville has an accessible tone of voice. In its marketing content, the brand positions itself as that one film friend you’re always asking for recommendations and whose reviews on Letterboxd you enjoy reading. Fresh, personal, and free of complicated jargon, Cineville speaks to a younger crowd without alienating older members. It strives to be inclusive, enthusiastic and honest, focusing on personal recommendations and shared experience. just offering the stats, Cineville hones in on how a film can make you feel.

  2. All-you-can-watch subscription

For young people on a budget, an all-you-can-watch subscription transforms going to the movies from a luxury into a habit. No matter which film you pick, attending a cinema with Cineville never feels like a waste of money or time, making it as stress-free and seamless as getting a cup of coffee. The Cineville model, combined with app-based access and no per-visit fees, opens the door to casual and frequent visits, positioning cinemagoing as a spontaneous, regular leisure activity. ‘It allows me to go on a whim. I’m doing nothing this afternoon, there’s this film on – why not go?’, said a Cineviller from Austria in a 2025 impact study.$^3$

  3. Community events

In addition to providing unlimited access to cinemas and films, Cineville actively fosters a vibrant young film community through curated events such as previews, parties, quizzes and outdoor screenings. In Cineville’s first years, especially, these interactive activities help strengthen audience engagement by bringing likeminded young film enthusiasts together. Cineville NL has organised hundreds of succesful, fun events over the years; Nonstop’s monthly members-only Vienna previews are always sold out; and since starting in 2022 , Cineville Belgium organised over 40 events across the country.$^4$

  4. A young, open-minded and curious team

The lion’s share of the Cineville team consists of younger employees (18-35 years), which is essential in terms of relatability and outreach. You can’t be up to date and know what the kids like without being a (big) kid yourself. The Cineville team always tries to approach life and cinema positively and curiously – a mindset which is shared and adopted by its members.

All kinds of film fans

Cineville caters to a wide range of film lovers and has experienced strong growth in audience numbers and diversity since its inception. Though younger members in the bigger cities often find their way to Cineville first, it’s important to emphasise that the total audience is much more diverse in age, location and tastes.

  1. From young students to older film buffs

Cineville always considers the specific potential of its large group of older members (45+). Older audiences often take more convincing but once they’re on board, they've shown to have a higher visit frequency and retention rate than younger audiences. They also like going to the cinema alone.$^5$ By joining forces with the cinemas (who know their audience best) and focusing on specific audience preferences, Cineville is able to also reach this older group. In the future, special attention will be reserved for the age group in between 35 and 45 and (their) children. Cineville believes in broadening everyone's cinematic horizon.

  2. From the big cities to less densely populated regions

Cineville believes in the power of collaboration between multiple cinemas in proximity, whether it’s within a single city or a specific region. Competition is part of the Cineville concept. The network preserves and even strengthens the cinema’s unique identities in the shape of an 'anti-franchise' that actively encourages Cineville members to explore new theaters, new films and new crowds. For Cineville NL, although as of 2025 about 80% of members live in the Randstad (an area including the Netherlands' four largest cities), membership numbers in less densely populated areas have grown significantly, with Cineville now covering almost the entire country.$^5$

  3. From films you know and love to films you didn’t know and love

Cineville likes to get to know its members and their preferences through market and impact research, in order to help them discover all there is to see. At the same time, Cineville believes that no audience – and no audience habit – is set in stone. That is why Cineville also successfully encourages members to visit cinemas they’ve never been to, and to make bolder film choices. A 2024 survey showed that 86% of Cineville members enjoy exploring genres outside their cinematic comfort zone. This is especially true for younger users, where 91% of members under 35 say they explore different types of films thanks to Cineville.$^6$ As a result, Cineville members actively contribute to a film culture that is financially healthy, diverse, and vibrant.

These figures highlight that Cineville is not simply following audience trends – it is reshaping them. With targeted marketing strategies for different age groups, Cineville bridges generational gaps in film culture and plays a key role in building the next generation of engaged cinemagoers, while maintaining a strong connection with its more traditional fan base.
